Wiki Loves Monuments in the United States 2025

[edit]

Hello! In 2024, you contributed to Wiki Loves Monuments in the United States. Thanks to people like you, we had over 350 participants upload more than 2,700 photos of cultural and historic sites from all over the country. Hundreds of these photos now help illustrate Wikipedia articles, improving our open knowledge about United States history, culture, and heritage. If you haven't seen them yet, you can view the top-ten winners of the US competition here.

We're back with Wiki Loves Monuments 2025 in the United States throughout the month of October, and I'd like to welcome you to participate again. Check out our event page for more information.

New to this year, in addition to our typical top-ten prizes, we have new prize categories for the following:

  • Most sites newly photographed
  • Top 2 Native American site photos
  • Top 2 UAV (drone) photos

Once again, thank you for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments 2024, and we hope to see you again in this year's event! If you have any questions, please leave them on the event talk page.

Screenshots in WLM US 2025

[edit]

Kevin, are users allowed to upload screenshots of images? I can't find a specific rule stating this, but believe since the user mentioned they are screenshots, how can it be proven to be their work? See File:Fort King George1.jpg and File:Fort King George2.jpg. Ktkvtsh (talk) 21:00, 18 October 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Ktkvtsh: Apologies for the late response. It's not unheard of for users to upload screenshots of their own work (usually if they have limited technical knowledge when it comes to files and sharing), but yes, it can be a red flag. We can reverse image search to try to see if the image(s) exist elsewhere on the internet, or ask the user to upload the actual original files, or otherwise open a deletion discussion if we have reasonable doubt on it being their own work. ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 03:19, 31 October 2025 (UTC)Reply

Information on temporary account IP viewer rights

[edit]

Hello Kevin Payravi,

On November 12, temporary accounts will be enabled on Commons. The IP of unregistered users will then be hidden for most users. You, as a patroller or license reviewer, are eligible to request the new temporary account IP viewer right, if you need it to continue fighting vandalism and abuse on Commons. If you want to request the right, please file the request here. Please be aware that you also have to accept the Wikimedia Access to Temporary Account IP Addresses Policy in your preferences. For more information about temporary accounts, look at the project page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:34, 7 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

Invitation to Join – Event Registration on Wikimedia Commons (WLF Office Hour)

[edit]

Dear Event organizer,

I hope you’re doing well. I’m pleased to invite you to join our upcoming office-hour session: Event Registration on Wikimedia Commons, taking place on 28 November 2025 at 16:00 UTC via Zoom.

As an organiser who already holds the “Event Organizer” rights on Wikimedia Commons and is using or exploring the Event Registration tool, we would greatly appreciate your participation.

The session will be led by Giovanna Fontenelle (WMF), Program Officer for Culture and Heritage at the Wikimedia Foundation.

Purpose of the session:

  • To walk through the workflow of enabling registration for your events on CampaignEvents extension (via the Event Registration tool) on Event Center.
  • To share best practices, tips, and examples from event organisers within the Wikimedia movement.
  • To provide a space for questions, peer-sharing and support for organisers implementing registration workflows.

Next steps:

Please register yourself at event page to confirm your participation. We will then send the meeting agenda, access link, and any preparatory materials.

Feel free to share or forward this invitation to any fellow organisers in your network who hold the organiser rights.

Thank you for considering this invitation. We’re excited to bring together our organiser community and walk through the registration workflow together.

Warm regards,

On behalf of the Wiki Loves Folklore International Team
