Design of Lawrence Oates' sledge flag

[edit]

Article(s): Lawrence Oates, Scott of the Antarctic (film)

Request
Could somebody please create an SVG file of the sledging flag which was designed for Lawrence Oates prior to the Terra Nova Expedition but without actually ever being manufactured for him to use during said expedition (hence the need for "Design of" in the file name), as seen and described in detail (in the "Full description" section) here? Flag of Qu'aiti

[edit]

Article(s): en:Qu'aiti and other related articles

Request
Hello! I am requesting that the current flag that we have of the Qu'aiti Sultanate be fixed to match the image I took of the historical version of the flag, and that a version of the royal standard of the sultan be made. Thanks, --𐩣𐩫𐩧𐩨 Abo Yemen (𓃵) 18:35, 28 August 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Abo Yemen: this request is fulfilled, isnt it? --Mrmw (talk) 05:11, 3 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Mrmw not really, the crown needs to be fixed since I am really bad with vector art (it should match the one shown in this video, skip to 11:48), and the castles need to match the ones in the same video 𐩣𐩫𐩧𐩨 Abo Yemen (𓃵) 11:42, 3 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Abo Yemen: Pick one file for each element (tower and crown) that should be used.
Note: It must strictly be an SVG file, and it is sufficient if the desired element is included as part of the graphic:
--Mrmw (talk) 08:40, 5 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Mrmw The thing is that I checked both categories and they dont really match what the flag looks like, which is why I started this request, to have someone vectorize the thing from scratch 𐩣𐩫𐩧𐩨 Abo Yemen (𓃵) 10:02, 5 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Abo Yemen: You're saying that you checked over 3k svg-files with towers and over 4k svg-files with crowns and no one is suitable for this flag? I can hardly believe it. --Mrmw (talk) 12:21, 5 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Mrmw 3k and 4k? Category:SVG coat of arms elements - towers has 42 files and Category:SVG coat of arms elements - crowns has 122 files... There is no reason for you to be this bitey about it. If you don't want to take this request then its fine 𐩣𐩫𐩧𐩨 Abo Yemen (𓃵) 12:34, 5 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Abo Yemen: No, everything is fine, but if you say you’ve checked all the existing SVG files, then that surprises me – the files that exclusively depict a tower or a crown are indeed few.
But as I already mentioned, the SVG files that contain a crown or a tower merely as one element among many should also be taken into account. These elements can easily be extracted and, for example, used for the flag in your request.
Did you see the collapsible boxes at the bottom of this post? These contain some of the countless relevant files that could potentially include these elements – they are all included in the categories I mentioned above. --Mrmw (talk) 12:57, 5 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Ill take a look at them and tell you if I found something 𐩣𐩫𐩧𐩨 Abo Yemen (𓃵) 13:18, 5 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Abo Yemen Is the crown okay now? Swiãtopôłk (talk) 20:00, 24 September 2025 (UTC)[reply]

no because that shit is AI generated Feitidede☆゚.* 04:03, 14 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Do you even have any actual proof of that? And regardless of whether it is or isn't, I don't believe that would diminish its encyclopedic value to the relevant articles it would be appearing on in SVG form. Also, there's really no justification for you to resort to bad language. Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 13:49, 14 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
apologies for the language but i really really REALLY despise the use of generative AI, especially for image generation and artistic purposes. i do not have a single ounce of respect for a "design" made using artificial intelligence and i would rather that the future generations forget about it than waste my time vectorizing it

Article(s): en:Gravitatonal water (but this may change)]]

Is it possible to change the French labels to English? I believe there is a special tool that could allow other languages in the future too.
From top to bottom the labels should read:
  1. Soil particle
  2. Hygroscopic water
  3. Air
  4. Capillary water
  5. Gravitational water

Optionally you could choose nicer colours. For context:

  1. is pointing at the khaki blobs
  2. is pointing at the dark blue lines that always cling to the soil particles
  3. is pointing at a white air gap
  4. is the light blue water that usually sits in in the soil matrix
  5. is the light blue gravitational water that fills up the bottom quarter of the image. It drains out after 24 hours (that is why only the bottom is full)

Insignias and flags of Bangladesh Military

Article(s): Articles related to the Bangladesh Military

Request
I have recently visited the en:Bangladesh Military Museum, where insignias of various formations and ranks were displayed. However, I have not uploaded those images to Wikimedia Commons due to uncertainty about their copyright status. Creating SVG versions of these insignias (and corresponding flags where applicable) would be valuable additions to Commons. Reference images can be found in this drive folder Thanks--Tausheef Hassan (talk) 19:27, 4 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Graphist opinion(s)
Hello, Tausheef Hassan. I agree that these images would be valuable for Commons; however —
  1. Regarding the copyright concerns, please refer to Commons:Copyright rules by territory/Bangladesh and determine the photographs' copyright status. If your jpg photos are subject to copyright concerns, vectorizing them into SVGs are not going to magically lift the copyright restrictions.
  2. This is a loaded request of 50 - 60 images at once, with varying complexities. Most of them are not mere simple geometric shapes, but with complex vehicles / weapons / animals involved.
  3. Some of the images in your Google Drive is not properly labeled. This makes it extremely hard to identify which badge belongs to which troop, or what text to put on the badges.
  4. Some of the images are taken with light source not so ideal, making it hard to discern the details (reflections, over/under exposure).
The best way to make us graphists take the "bait" and do the vectorization is to verify their copyright status, clean up the images (adjusting exposure level, crop, etc), organize them, and upload the individual badges to Commons. Some people in Commons:Graphic Lab/Photography workshop may be able to assist with certain steps here. Then launch a request for them in multiple different batches, with about 5 badges per request.  Not done --Designism (talk) 05:20, 15 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

SVG File clean-ups

I've used a couple of files from other users to put together these election maps using the right colours etc. The issue is the fonts in the heading and the key. Somehow they've gone all weird after upload, though they look fine when I download them to my computer. Clearly something's gone wrong in the file, but I don't know what. Any help to fix this would be hugely appreciated. Thank you! --Mangwanani (talk) 19:24, 11 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Graphist opinion(s)
@Mangwanani: I’ve edited and simplified one of your two files. It was heavily cluttered; I can’t imagine what methods or processing steps could produce something like that.
Before/after comparison: 315 objects in 4 MB vs. 13,700 objects in 14 MB.
Thank you for your work and contribution — it’s valuable — but please reconsider how you create SVG files.
I can’t and won’t edit the second file; it’s too much manual work.
Please use the cleaned file as a template for the other file. --Mrmw (talk) 13:06, 12 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
You're amazing. Thank you! I'm not very good at all this, but I'm trying my best. I'd basically cobbled together two files from two other users and changed the colours as necessary. I think I've been able to use your fixes to clean up the other file. Not sure it's as good a job as yours, but it is at least rendering correctly on screen.
Thanks so much! Mangwanani (talk) 16:55, 12 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Mrmw Thanks for your work. I really am no good on this side of things. I can just about recolour things others have made on Inkscape. But I’m trying to improve the quantity and quality of information about Zimbabwe on here as much as I can. Going forward, these two maps will be used a lot as the basis for other diagrams. I hate to ask, but if you’re able to do whatever is needed to them, then when I use them as templates in future, I won’t be causing any other hassles…
File:Zimbabwe 2023 Constituencies Blank.svg
File:Zimbabwe Constituencies 2008-2022.svg
I have no idea what it is you see that needs cleaning up, nor do I have any idea how to do it myself, I’m just so grateful that you are able to do it and can help me in making the country I love more visible on these platforms. Mangwanani (talk) 02:07, 14 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Mangwanani: Can you provide the data for the two colored heat maps?
For each of the 210 constituencies (1 … 210, as listed at both template-maps), the corresponding color code.
It’s also sufficient if you simply give the result as shown in the graphic legend (50, 55, 60, 65, 70, 75, 80, 85%).
Another option would be only to provide a list linking the 210 district numbers with the eight possible result values (1–2, 2–5, 3–5, …, 207–7, 208–8, 209–1, 210–4), i prefer this option, so i would just pick the colorcode by myself. feel free to answer here, at your (pls ping me there) or at my diskpage --Mrmw (talk) 16:13, 14 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Mangwanani: My mistake: the distinction between the two colors is missing (y/g and r/g); for each of the two heatmaps the array or list must look as follows:
  • example heatmap 2018: (1–y2, 2–g5, 3–g5, …, 207–g7, 208–y8, 209–y1, 210–g4)
  • example heatmap 2023: (1–r5, 2–r5, 3–g4, …, 207–g8, 208–g7, 209–r1, 210–r4)
--Mrmw (talk) 19:52, 14 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Furfur, Mangwanani, and Glrx: I have now completely rebuilt both heatmaps and their associated templates (a short note block is included on the file description page for potential users).
As described there, the files are now structured so that heatmaps of this kind can easily be edited with a text editor.
For this purpose, I added IDs for the 210 constituencies and defined the color shades.
Both sets of IDs can be linked at the top of the file.
I extracted the data myself from the articles.
In general, images should preferably not contain a title or heading, so I removed them.
Legends can be integrated into an image, but in this case I moved them to the image description in the articles.
This makes the images more versatile for further use.
The file description pages of all four files have also been revised.
Unfortunately, I only noticed after uploading the heatmaps that the wiki renderer apparently does not display the CSS styles correctly (the colors are not shown at all).
Before uploading, I only tested it in the browser (Chrome) – when you open the image with Chrome (on Commons by clicking on the image), it is displayed correctly.
I hope “Glrx” can help here, he is the actual SVG expert. He just hasn’t been online the last few days, so we may have to be a bit patient. --Mrmw (talk) 15:49, 15 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I mean, thank you. This is, I'm sure, amazing. Though I would make the following observations:
1) The heat maps are now all blank; the colours have gone.
2) I have no idea what programme I'm supposed to use to edit the files now. My skills are limited and I've always just used Inkscape to change the colours as needed. For dealing with projects around Africa like this, we need to be able to make the things accessible to those with limited abilities and limited resources - I'm not the only one working on these projects and we're all in a similar boat of doing our best with very little to hand.
3) By removing the headings and the keys, you've broken the continuity I was trying to create in these maps with maps from other elections such as File:2022 French Presidential Election Second Round Map.svg and File:2025 German federal election.svg. It would be nice to restore them to maintain the consistency in the style that has already been established elsewhere.
So I guess, on the one hand this is probably all amazing and wonderful and has all been a hell of a lot of work for you, I'm not sure a) where I go from here b) how we can restore the elements that have been lost that preserve the established Wikipedia style? Please help and advise... Mangwanani (talk) 16:54, 15 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Mangwanani: Okay, thanks for the hints, I understand.
With what I intended, editing and reusing the files should be even easier and simpler than editing them with Inkscape – but that is irrelevant as long as Glrx has not commented on whether the technique I used can be adjusted so that the display works properly on Wikipedia.
But regardless of that: an SVG file can be opened with a text editor, and the visible SVG code now is self-explanatory. You can directly understand which colors correspond to which areas and adjust or change them in text form.
The issue regarding the title and the legend is unfortunate – I didn’t know that. If Glrx can provide technical help here, both elements can be reinserted quickly.
Since no colors are being displayed now and I don’t know when Glrx will be online again, one could consider reverting the files – it’s up to you. --Mrmw (talk) 17:25, 15 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Mrmw: Headed out the door now. I do not believe librsvg (essentially CSS 2.1) supports var(). Glrx (talk) 17:41, 15 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Named filter could paint the color. Glrx (talk) 17:45, 15 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Can we revert the files for the time being so they display properly on the Wikipedia articles? Once we have a better idea of the way forward we can reupload and replace if need be. How does that sound? Mangwanani (talk) 19:11, 15 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
do it --Mrmw (talk) 20:32, 15 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Furfur and Mangwanani: So, I have now revised and uploaded both heatmaps again – this time without the CSS-styles technique, which apparently is not currently supported by Wikimedia.
However, the files are now structured and cleaned up; all electoral districts are sorted according to the lists on the file description pages of the respective map templates and assigned the corresponding IDs.
If an Inkscape user now ungroups the 210 electoral districts, they can use the tab key to move to the next electoral district (or use Shift + Tab to move backwards through the list).
The same applies to the two map templates. ✓ Done --Mrmw (talk) 21:29, 16 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, would somebody like to create a user icon for temporary account IP viewers on Wikidata? You can find the existing Wikimedia TAIV icons at Category:Wikimedia temporary account IP viewer icons and the existing Wikidata user icons at Category:Wikidata user rights icons. I think the TAIV icon should be placed in the bottom right corner of the Wikidata logo similarly to how it has been done for other Wikimedia projects. Thanks in advance! --Samoasambia 16:47, 12 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks a lot! I would maybe size up the TAIV symbol more. Right now it's quite small compared to the other Wikimedia TAIV user icons. Samoasambia 20:10, 12 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Samoasambia: ✓ Done even bigger? --Mrmw (talk) 04:54, 13 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

i don't think the elements can be reused for the seal of senegal as they're just too different, would have to be drawn from scratch Feitidede☆゚.* 04:19, 19 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
i'm trying really really hard to find any sort of official document that's stamped with the lion passant seal, but i can't. i just haven't seen it being used anywhere other than on medals Feitidede☆゚.* 18:40, 19 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Disagree, I think the white star should be a little longer to resemble the irl version of the flag posted above. Could you update it? I can also do it. Feitidede☆゚.* 16:47, 23 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Feitidede: its an exakt vectorization of this png - if you want to create another version please upload a new file, not a new version of this one - thx --Mrmw (talk) 18:06, 23 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
fair enough, this version is already close enough to the real thing, but I don't think that tiny white portion of the crown of thorns is actually a part of the design. it does not appear on any of the real life examples of this flag. maybe you could keep the star's size but remove that? otherwise this vectorized file could create a false positive feedback loop Feitidede☆゚.* 18:45, 23 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Various national seals (Part 2)

[edit]

Article(s): Various

Request
Please re-create the following national seals.
The Seal of Austria can be made out very faintly in File:Katja Sturm-Schnabl.JPG and File:Ehrung von Fr. Lily Renée Phillips durch Frau Bundesministerin (44248679164).jpg when enlarging to a higher resolution, with Republik Österreich occupying nearly 180° in the top half of the outer ring. An alternative version appears in File:Urkunde für die Verleihung des Goldenen Verdienstzeichens der Republik Österreich.jpg. It is unclear which is more official, or if they are interchangeable. I was going to recommend using File:1945 sw gross.svg in monochrome with a hatched escutcheon, but that file is less than satisfactory. Perhaps File:Coat of arms of Austria.svg could be altered into a monochrome version?
The Seal of Romania requires updating due to the addition of the Iron Crown in 2016. The change to the seal are sourced here and here. There is a vector version of the 1992 File:Romanian Seal.svg, but it is a little choppy. It would be best if the 1992 seal could be improved and left as a separate file as well. With my renaming rights, I would then rename it to something such as "Seal of Romania (1992‒2016)".
The Seal of Bulgaria is seen in File:Great Seal of Bulgaria.jpg. The inscription in upper case Cyrillic letters is "РЕПУБЛИКА БЪЛГАРИЯ - ДЪРЖАВЕН ПЕЧАТ".
The Seal of Moldova, seen in File:State seal of Moldova 2013.gif, may be more difficult due to the peculiar shape of the letters in the inscription. I still greatly appreciate any effort made.
