This obscurely named category is for a very specific painting but not other similar ones

[edit]

Photograph 221 in volume 2 of La Peinture de Pompéi (edited by Irelli, Aoyagi, De Caro and Pappalardo) is only one of several very similar but distinct paintings in the polychrome exedra 'p'. So this category can only contain this particular painting but not the others. For example this painting File:Panel with naval scene below basket and mask, Pompeii VI.15.1 (House of the Vetti), polychrome exedra p, north wall.jpg is **not** part of this category (it was incorrectly moved here so I moved it back to the parent category @Yiyi).

The book does not have numbers/photographs of the other similar paintings, which is just one of many reasons why categorising based on volume 2 of a specific book (and not even volume 1!) seems unwise and really confusing for anyone who isn't actively consulting that book while browsing wikimedia commons.

I'm not sure what the best thing to do is to move away from the Irelli-Aoyagi.. categories. We don't want to remove these "categories" totally because they can be useful but they shouldn't be the primary hierarchical categorisation method. Does anyone know a way to turn these "categories" into something more like "tags"? BeakheadIntrados (talk) 10:07, 14 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

(Edit: I made a post on the village discussion about the more general situation.)
