This is a posthumous farewell letter in French from Bernard Vankersschaver (1841 - 1906) to his daugther Estelle Margareta Elisabeth Vankersschaver (1882 - 1942). The letter is wel written, tough trough and tackles many subjects from the Catholic faith (fervent catholic, but has many reservations about religious fanaticism and the role of the church as an institution), the economy, the morals of nations, civilisation, etc. There is advice to his daugther, who to chose for marriage, etc. At that time woman had few rigths in Belgium and where dependant on the man. It is written on Xbre (X = 10, october) and handed to the notary on the last day of the 19th century: 31 december 1899. He probably likes symbolism. He died on the 22 february 1906. His daugther married in 1904, so his advice in the letter was not used, but he probably advised his daugther in person. This letter was kept in the Vankersschaver family, until the man of Estelle Vankersschaver, Joseph Gheysens, died on 6 march 1967, after wich my father received the documents. He was so impressed with the letter that he decided handtype the text.
